June 2022 on My Little Underground

I kicked off June 2022 on My Little Underground grading midterms, sharing my favorite singles, EPs, and full length albums of the first six months of the year. I also got to chat with New York underground Hip Hop heavyweight, Homeboy Sandman (who's There In Spirit EP made on to this year's midterms) and for a third time, Joe Trainor of Dummy pulled up to talk about a special club he recently joined.

Midterms 2020 Part One: Singles and EPs

I kicked off the annual My Little Underground Midterms talking up some of my favorite singles of the first half of the year from the likes of Velvet Vision. She released "Silver City" packaged with an ELO cover in "Strange Magic". Both are etherial pop gems that find shelter in reverb but illuminate vocal and melodic prowess. New York's Kelly Moonstone (fka The Afr0dite) is in a state of reintroducing herself artistically and showcasing her singing ability on the single "Just Another Day". New name, same skills. She's a hell of a rapper too. As far as EPs, there were some great remix EPs from the likes from the likes of Spoon, who shared a collection of remixes of "Wild", one of the singles from the band's latest album Lucifer on The Sofa. Bernice put out Bonjourno My Friends, made up of select remixes from the band's 2021 LP, Eau De Bonjourno.

Midterms 2022 Part Two: Albums

I wrapped up this year's midterms with my good friend Conor Rooney talking some of our favorite full length LPs from January to June. Conor enjoyed the long players from Soul Glo (as did I) and Spoon. I really enjoyed the street rap manifesto from Benny The Butcher in Tana Talk 4, as well as Hypnos, the romantic and spiritual debut from Ravyn Lenae. We also talk about the Yeah Yeah Yeahs comeback as well as the strange rollout of the new Black Star album.

Homeboy Sandman Spends Time With The Rhyme

One of Hip Hop's potent lyricists, Homeboy Sandman, talked up his new mixtape I Can't Sell These and how in my opinion, serves as human music curation with Sand rhyming over tunes from the likes of Black Moth Super Rainbow and Angel Rada. Sandman recently started an imprint Dirty Looks and shared some of his plans and the caliber of MC he's looking to work with. Boy Sand spends time with the rhyme but not social media, listen below to find out why that is and why he decided to shift to a email newsletter.

Dummy The Third

Joe Trainor of Dummy returns to My Little Underground for a third time to talk up a new club he's joined, the Sub Pop Singles Club! Dummy released two new songs, "Mono Retriever" and "Pepsi Vacuum" for the famous series and discussed how all of this came together. On the subject of new music, Dummy also shared an unreleased tune "Etherial Security Guard" for the new "Through The Soil II" compilation and gave insight on the vinyl release of the bands phenomenal debut EPs from 2020. Dummy is also hitting the road this summer with Horsegirl and Lifeguard and it will be exciting to hear these tunes live!
